3 Recall Fundamentals

There are 3 recall fundamentals we need to implement and live by when training our dog to come when called no matter what!

Positive Associations to their name and Recall cue

We only want positive things to come when they hear their name and recall cue. This will set us up for success with training a reliable recall. As I talked about in the previous lesson, if we use the cue or their name for things they find negative and not rewarding – our recalls will break down.

Always Reward

As mentioned in the lesson prior, we are always going to reward our dog when they successfully come to us. There are many different things we can reward our dogs with other than food – so remember to fill out the worksheet on what your dog loves and what your dog doesn’t like to figure out what rewards you will use during your training!

Practice & Engagement

In addition, we always want to be practicing these 3 fundamentals and engaging with our dogs. On walks, with friends, in the house, wherever you are. Your dog should always be at the forefront of your mind!
