What is Recall & Why is it Important?

Whether you have a new puppy, a teenage pupper, or a senior doggo. Recall, commonly known as the cue “come”, is when you call your dog with a verbal or hand signal cue and they stop what they are doing come to you!

A solid recall is when the dog comes to us, sits, and waits with focus on us until we give them a release cue or their next direction.

So why is Recall so important?

  1. Freedom! Having a solid recall allows your dog to have full freedom off-leash where appropriate. This helps our dogs grow confidence and run free stretching those cute furry legs of theirs! Letting their noses take them, or allowing them to socialize without a leash. These are all important to your dog but must be done safely and within appropriate environments.
  2. Safety! Let say your dog dashes out the door when visitors come and something catches their eye! We want to be able to call our dog back instead of them running into the street without care. Putting them in some dangerous situations.
  3. Less Stress! This goes along with the two mentioned above. In any situation, you and your family will be less stressed knowing your dog has a reliable recall. Whether it’s on your own property, on public trails, or when your dog gets loose in an unexpected situation. Your stress & frustration with your dog being off-leash will be gone!

These are three main reasons recall is important, even if your dog isn’t able to be off-leash because of the place you live. A reliable recall is still important for safety in unpredictable situations as I mentioned in the video above.
